CHRISTEN FOURTH AT GIRO DEL VENETO AFTER AGGRESSIVE FINALE
The Swiss rider attacks alongside Marc Hirschi before narrowly missing the podium in Vicenza. A puncture disrupts Quinten Hermans’ sprint.
Fabio Christen delivered a strong performance for Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team at the Giro del Veneto, finishing fourth after playing an active role in the decisive stages of the race and narrowly missing out on a podium place.
The Swiss rider was among the protagonists on the demanding finishing circuit around Monte Berico, responding to an acceleration from Brandon McNulty before following a counter-attack by Marc Hirschi. The move briefly threatened to stay clear, but the chasing group managed to close the gap before the finish.
Christen quickly switched his focus to the uphill sprint, producing a powerful acceleration in the closing metres. His fourth place came with some frustration, having finished just short of the podium, but also provided encouraging confirmation of his improving condition after a challenging season.
The team delivered a committed collective performance throughout the race, with the riders working together to put themselves in the best possible position to fight for the result.
Quinten Hermans was also preparing to contest the sprint but suffered a puncture just as he was launching his effort, compromising his chances in the finale.
Fabrio Christen said:
“Originally, the plan was to wait for the sprint, but I had really good legs throughout the race. When McNulty attacked, I was on his wheel and followed him. Then Hirschi counter-attacked and I realised nobody was really following, so I went with him. I think if the riders behind had hesitated a little longer, we might have made it to the finish together.
“Once we were caught, I had to switch my focus back to the sprint. I knew I still had a good acceleration, but unfortunately the finish line came about 50 metres too soon for me. I was only half a metre away from the podium, which hurts a little.
“After such a difficult season, though, I'm really happy to feel like myself again. My legs are finally good, and I want to make the most of that. It's almost a shame the season is coming to an end when I'm feeling like this, but it's a very positive sign for next year.”
Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team will return to racing in the Veneto region on Sunday, 18 October, for the Veneto Classic, bringing the Italian autumn racing programme to a close.
