Pidcock takes strong second at Eschborn-Frankfurt after aggressive team performance on new course.
A reimagined course at Eschborn-Frankfurt delivered a fast, selective and electrifying edition of the German WorldTour classic, with the race coming alive over the final 60 kilometres and culminating in a reduced sprint from an elite front group.
The day began with a five-rider breakaway building a significant advantage, stretching beyond seven minutes and continuing to grow as the peloton hesitated. Recognising the threat, Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team took full responsibility for the race, committing riders to the front and methodically bringing the gap down to within one minute and thirty seconds.
From there, the race dynamics shifted decisively. With 60 kilometres remaining, repeated accelerations from key contenders ignited the peloton, setting the stage for the decisive phase.
On the final ascent of the Mammolshainer Stich, the race exploded. A select group of 12 riders formed at the front, including our leader Tom Pidcock. The move quickly established a narrow but consistent advantage of around 30 seconds over the chasing peloton, holding firm all the way into Frankfurt.
In the final sprint, Tom Pidcock delivered a strong performance to secure second place on the line after a tightly contested finish.
"The idea was to come here to enjoy just racing since I was close by. Anyway, this week, kind of resetting before the summer. I had low expectations but really surprised myself. Team did a great job. They they still backed me. They rode, they kept the race under control and I think it was a good race. I would have signed for second to start the day but obviously in the end it was frustrating with the sprint. George coming from the back, he did a great move and yeah, just took us a bit by surprise. But yes, going to be happy with second position now. A few more days resetting before full focus in the summer and it will be a long summer with important races."
Sports Director Jens Zemke highlighted the team’s proactive approach and collective strength throughout the race:
"With Tom at the start, everything changed for us. I already said in the morning that we had to take leadership and responsibility for the race, and that’s exactly what we did. When the five riders in the break had around seven and a half minutes, we started to control the race with Xavier. He rode strongly until kilometre 100, which was impressive, and did a really good job keeping things under control. After that, we continued as a team, with everyone contributing and maintaining the pressure. I tried to motivate the guys for the final, and Tom really grew into the race, he got better and better. At the beginning he was a bit hesitant, but in the final he was sharp and fully present. He made it into the front group of 12 riders on the last ascent of the Mammolshainer Stich, which was exactly where we wanted him to be. In the final, Tom was first out of the last corner, but then George came from behind and overtook him. Of course, Tom is a bit disappointed, but we have a lot of respect for what he did today. We all know where he’s coming from in terms of his injury, so it’s a very strong result. Full credit also to the team, it was a really strong collective performance."
With a bold racing strategy and a cohesive team performance, Team Pinarello Q36.5 demonstrated control, intent and resilience throughout the day, laying down a strong marker ahead of the summer campaign.
