Captain's Log
Entry: 003
Captain: Mark Donovan
Race: Giro d'Italia
Amid a chaotic start to the race, our road captain reflects on responsibility, resilience, and how the team is adapting heading into the tougher phases of the Giro.
Race strategy
“It means a lot to take on this role at a Grand Tour. I still don’t always feel like one of the older guys in the team, but I guess it reflects the experience I’ve built over the years. More importantly, it shows the trust the team has in me, that they believe I can make the right calls and help guide the team in a positive way.
My role is really about being that link within the race, making decisions on the road, communicating clearly with the riders and the car, and helping everyone stay in the best possible position. In a race like this, things can change very quickly, so it’s about staying aware, anticipating situations, and helping the team react in the best way possible.”
Race Notes
“The first stages have been quite chaotic, with crashes and challenging weather conditions. In those situations, there’s often not a lot you can do, you just have to stay as focused and as well positioned as possible.
The first crash happened with around 500 meters to go, so there was really no way to avoid it, and it was a real shame for Matteo. Then on stage two, we managed to stay upright, which was important. From there, it’s about regrouping, making sure everyone is okay, and getting the team back together as quickly as possible. These moments are part of racing, especially in a Grand Tour, so it’s about staying calm and dealing with them as best as you can.”
Notes vs Previous Expectations
“Losing Matteo early in the race obviously changed our plans for the following stages, but in terms of my role, it doesn’t really change much. We simply shift our focus to different riders and slightly different objectives.
At the end of the day, the responsibility remains the same, making decisions, communicating with the team, and keeping everything organised on the road. It’s about adapting to the situation while maintaining a clear structure within the team, regardless of the circumstances.”
Closing Thoughts
“I think the race is only going to get harder from here. The first stages have already been quite stressful, but in terms of the parcours, they’ve been more manageable compared to what’s coming next.
We’re expecting some really tough days ahead, with big breakaway opportunities and more demanding GC stages. That’s when the race will really start to take shape. From now on, it’s about being ready for those key moments, staying focused day by day, and making the most of the opportunities that come.”
