Bennett Back Where He Belongs: Podium Return After the Fight

A powerful and meaningful return to the front of the race: Sam Bennett sprinted to third place in Stage 2 of the Region Pays de la Loire Tour, finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne after a high-speed bunch sprint.

After a difficult winter marked by health complications, Bennett underwent a cardiac ablation procedure in mid-November. A gradual and carefully managed recovery followed, with the Irish sprinter only returning to training in the early months of the year and making his race comeback in March. Today’s performance represents a key milestone in that journey, both physically and mentally.

On the fast run-in to Les Sables-d’Olonne, the team delivered a composed and controlled performance, positioning Bennett perfectly in the decisive moments. In a competitive sprint won by Ethan Vernon, Bennett showed sharpness and determination, fighting all the way to the line to secure third place.

A first real return to contesting a full sprint at the highest level in months, and a clear signal.

"I think we rode really well as a Team. It was fantastic to have the support from the guys in the final lap and to keep kind of calm on the front, stay out of danger. And also, having the guys there so that they didn't lose too much time in the actual final for the GC. And then in the final, just try to get closer to Vernon. The last 50 meters, I just lost a wheel. I tried my best to hold it, but it meant I had to do kind of two accelerations to kind of come back and to go around the long way. And by the time I got out, Vernon was gone. He opened up his sprint just as I got closed in. And I think a bit more was possible today, but for sure, it was nice to finally do a sprint after, I don't know how many months, a long time. Definitely nice to be in the mix today."

For Bennett, feeling the wind again while fighting for victory in a bunch sprint is as important as the result itself.

For the team, it is confirmation: step by step, the trajectory is the right one.
